Estimate when your shoes hit cushioning compression and outsole wear, based on hours played, surface, body weight and play style.

Why basketball shoes wear out faster than running shoes

Basketball is a lateral, multi-vector sport — every cut grinds the outsole differently from a treadmill stride. Cushioning gets compressed in repetitive impact zones (heel, forefoot under the big toe, lateral midfoot), and once the foam loses elastic memory, energy return drops by 20–35%. That's the point most players start feeling joint fatigue.

The 12-month indoor rule

The widely-cited "12 months of indoor play" benchmark assumes 4 hours per week. Scale that down or up against your actual hours. Outdoor play roughly halves the lifespan because asphalt and concrete chew through outsoles in months, not seasons.
