Why low-tops dominate guard play
Lower collars improve ankle articulation, save 0.4-0.6 oz, and let you reach lower in defensive stances. The trade-off (less collar lockdown) is more than offset by the speed gain for guard-priority play.

Cushioning at low-top heights

Lockdown without the collar
Low-cuts compensate for less collar wrap with structured midfoot cages, internal forefoot cradles, and tighter lacing patterns. This is why low-cuts can run narrow — the lockdown comes from the fit, not the cuff.

Cut height does not significantly affect first-acute-sprain rates. The peer-reviewed evidence is consistent. Pick by play style, not by ‘safety’ belief.
