Adidas Boost vs Lightstrike — which cushioning suits your game

Adidas Boost vs Lightstrike compared: feel, weight, energy return, durability, and the basketball shoes that use each.

The short answer

Boost is plush, deep and heavy. Lightstrike is firm, fast and light. Modern Adidas basketball flagships (Dame, Harden, AE, Trae, DON) use Lightstrike as the anchor and layer Boost only in specific impact zones. The pure-Boost basketball flagships of 2018-2020 are mostly retired.

How Boost works

Boost is a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) capsule cushioning. Pellets of TPU foam are bonded into a midsole shape. Boost compresses deep, returns roughly 70-72% of energy, and is heat-resistant (rare for foams). Trade-off: weight. A pure-Boost basketball platform sits 0.6-0.8 oz heavier than a comparable Lightstrike platform.

How Lightstrike works

Lightstrike is an EVA-blend court foam — denser than Phylon, lighter than Boost, firmer underfoot. It’s not technically supercritical but it has been Adidas’s flagship basketball cushioning since 2019. Energy return is around 60-65%, but the weight savings make the platform feel quicker on cuts.

Why Adidas pairs them

The current Dame and Harden lines layer Lightstrike under the forefoot (responsive, light, fast) with Boost under the heel (impact protection on landing). The combination keeps the platform under 14.5 oz while delivering the impact dampening big guards and forwards need.

Which shoes use what

Dame 9: Lightstrike + Bounce Pro. Harden Vol 8: Lightstrike + Boost. Trae 3: pure Lightstrike. AE 1: Lightstrike + Bounce Pro. DON Issue 6: Lightstrike + Bounce Pro. The Bounce-Pro variant is a different formulation than classic Boost — slightly firmer, slightly lighter.

Pick by play style

If you’re a guard or wing who values quickness, Lightstrike-anchored is the play. If you’re a wing-or-forward with a heavier game who lands hard, look for the dual-platform Lightstrike + Boost models. Use our cushioning comparison tool to compare both side-by-side.
